House Building Part 2 -- Finding Grandpa

For continuity sake I will have to say that my House Building stories are by no means in chronological order. 'Finding Grandpa', happened before both, 'Bomb Squad' and the soon to come, 'Oh My God, That's A Skull!' stories.

Though this story is not nearly as action packed as 'Bomb Squad' it definitely has a twist that generally still makes me shiver to this day.
As mentioned in the 'Bomb Squad' story, we have four structures on our property: Two houses, one shed, and one water shed. Tracey and I had already done a lot of work on the newer house and decided to venture into the older house. This house is just plain scary which will be described better in 'Oh My God, That's A Skull!' I'll just sum it up by saying there very possibly is a pit to hell and some other crazy stuff in this house which will, from here on, be referred to as 'THE RED HOUSE'.

We had to be very careful in the red house as we knew of at least one very deep hole in the middle of one of the rooms and no floor to cover it. Again, this story will be covered in a later post. It is, however, rather terrifying to know that at any second you could fall through the floor and fall to your death.

Anyway, we had worked our way to one of the back rooms and were slowly working our way through the refuse on the floor. There was a little bit of everything you could imagine in there. Magazines, bottles and various 'thing' lined the floor. I began working my way to an old chest that saw mostly buried. I happen to like chests. They make great coffee tables and whatnot and, well, they just look cool.

Tracey was more intent on being thorough as she didn't want to miss something important. I'm not 100% sure this worked out for our benefit but at least someone benefited.

Out of the blue Tracey began excitedly repeating, "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god..."

As you may guess, a many thing went through my mind at this very moment. I have heard my mother make frantic screams like this when she sees something like a frog or a mouse. Hell, I've even made noises like that when I've seen a spider. So one guess of mine was something furry or slithery was soon going to be very scared, very bewildered and start going bonkers.

Another possibility was she just found an enormous pile of cash. This too could have been possible as her grandpa never really trusted banks and kept money in odd places. To answer your question, yes, I have a metal detector and have used it a bit on the land and plan to do much more looking...

One last possibility is she found, lets say, something nasty like human remains.

I tried to bring her back to reality by asking her, "What?" about three or four times. She finally snapped out of it and I'll never forget what she said next...

"GRANDPA!", she said excitedly while pulling up a brass box with a name written on the attached paper. Looks like my third guess was right... In order to clarify since I've had multiple questions about this fact. Grandpa was, indeed, cremated so it was his ashes in the brass box not rotting flesh and bones.

Technically it was her great grandpa. Mother's mother's step father to be exact. He apparently wasn't Tracey's grandma's most favorite person in the world which is probably why he was left in a small suitcase on the floor of an abandoned house.

Unable to leave grandpa in a pile of crap and having no good place to take him Tracey decided that grandpa needed to come home with us for the time being. He now hangs out with her on her computer desk waiting for us to find him a good home.

We would like to find his wife and bury him with her but we aren't exactly sure where she is buried but that is a different story...
